Derby aims to hook children on lure of fishing

By Jenny Potter THE NUGGET
The sun was out at Lake Nosbonsing in Astorville saturday morning and luckily the fish were jumping as kids of all ages had their hooks baited and ready for the big one.

With help from the Ontario Provincial Police, the third annual Kids Fishing Derby gave kids a chance to get out in a boat and catch the biggest fish.

Siblings Andrew Clark, 8, and Susannah Nicholeson, 4, were out for their first time fishing from a boat.

"It's great," said Andrew. "But my fish escaped."

"It is really fun for the kids," said Darren Nicholeson, their father. "We don't own a boat, so the opportunity to get out is few and far between."

The event attracted 35 kids and many parents, making it a family event.

"We have a lot of new kids who have never fished before," said organizer Joanne St-Dennis. "We want to get them hooked on fishing instead of drugs."   Tristan Bertram, 12, shows his award-winning catches, Saturday afternoon. He was the first in the 12 and older category at the Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Nosbonsing in Astorville.
With 12 years of fishing experience between the two of them, brothers Crayden Simmons, 10, and Tristan Bertram, 12, had a strategy for the day.
"I've been bottom-fishing all day." said Tristan, "When you are bottom-fishing you need to reel in slowly, and if you feel something, give it a tug then reel slowly again."
Tristan's strategy paid off, as he took home first prize in the 12 and older category with a 22 cm. perch.
Craydan said they regularly fish with their family but this is their first competition.
"We love fishing and are just out here to have fun," said Tristan.
Isabelle Champagne, 6, and her brother Jonathan, 9, had beginner's luck. Isabelle hooked her first place in the seven-and- younger category, while Jonathan nabbed the trophy for the eight-to-eleven category.
