| The
Nosbonsing Anglers & Hunters "Adopt A
Highway" project has been launched. On May 3, 2008, A large number of Club volunteers turned out to help with the highway cleanup. This cleanup covered the Lake Nosbonsing Road from Delormes to the Clubhouse. The volunteers bagged and deposited somewhere between five and ten truckloads to the dump. The work completed around noon and shortly after, the skies opened up and rains came down. Congratulation to All and Well Done |

| Cleaning up | ||||
| CONGRATULATIONS
to the members of the Nosbonsing Anglers and Hunters in
Astorville for participating in their first clean up. The
group worked hard cleaning Lake Nosbonsing Road. Norma McQuoid, Paul Perron, Gerry Point, Barry Schruder, Bernie Cossar, Marlene Cossar, Bill Bale, Dave Hodgins, Brad Davis, Jerry Freeman, Murray Walker, Dwight Keall, Jennifer Ruttan, Shawn Ruttan, and Doug Ruttan the event coordinator, took part in the clean up. The volunteers filled five half-ton trucks to capacity with automotive parts, scrap metal, plastic bags/ styrofoam and plastic fast-food containers. Some of the obvious dump items were; 11 tires, five gallon plastic pails and very old garbage bags full of household garbage, part of a shed roof with shingles still on it, signs and wood. Any liquor, wine and beer bottles were returned to LCBO. The scrap metal will be sold to dealers and the money raised will go to the club. Other recyclable items will be turned into the East Ferris Blue Box Program. The volunteers have many thanks to the Council of East Ferris and the operators of East Ferris landfill site for allowing them to drop off non-recyclables for free. The clean up started at the clubhouse at 12 Astorville Rd. and went to Delorme's RV Centre for a total of five kilometers. Total time involved was three and a half hours. There were also numerous animal carcasses found --- five deer, four raccoons, two rabbits, one beaver, a skunk skeleton and an unknown animal skull. |

| CONSERVATION, COMMUNITY ARE THE FOCUS YEAR ROUND | ||||
| The following article was submitted to the Ontario Out Of Doors magazine by Barry Schruder | ||||
| For more than 25 years now, the Nosbonsing Anglers & Hunters , headquartered in Astorville, near North Bay, have been actively involved in conservation. With a membership of almost 100, they have grown from a small core of sportsmen joined by common goals: to spend time hunting and fishing in the area; to provide education to the public on conservation; and to improve conditions for hunting and fishing in the region. There is never a "down time" for this club, whose calander is chalk full of events year round. In January, the local deer and moose hunters compete for trophies and prizes at the Big Buck Night. In February, the club co-sponsors a family fishing day. In March they start planning the annual ATV Fundraiser that brings in thousands of dollars for conservation efforts. In June, anglers from across Ontario and the U.S. compete in the club's Pike Tournament for prizes of up to $25,000. A local tournament for family & friends is held every August providing for some natured compeitive angeling. |
|
|||
| In 2005 the Nosbonsing Anglers & Hunters realized a long time dream and purchased their own building. Always community minded, they then began renovations to make the clubhouse more accessible for the seniors and other groups who will use the facility. | ![]() |
|||
| While social events and
tournaments are important to the club, they also devote many
hours every year to conservation projects. Dedicated
volunteers have reclaimed old farmland to improve
wildlife habitat; feed deer during severe winters;
participated in antipoaching programs; rehabilitated
streams; held conservation classes in local schools;
transplanted bass; built duck nesting boxes; assisted in
firearms training; and much more. Like many clubs in Ontario, the Nosbonsing Anglers and Hunters have faced challenges. They took part in discussions regarding moose management in W.M.U. 48, and were instrumental in having the Pembroke District M.N.R. Office recognize the Nosbonsing area as a viable and vibrant part of its territory. |

| With the help of the O.F.A.H., they lobbied successfully for Sunday gun hunting in the area, and together with a local cross country ski club, were able to secure access to Crown lands for conservationists, hunters, and the general public. | ||||
| Outdoor traditions are being carried forward by the club's sponsorship of the East Nipissing Get Outdoors Club. This is one of several youth clubs that operate within the award winning O.F.A.H. Get Outdoors program. Kids from 8 to 18 years old are invited to contact the Nosbonsing club to get involved in this local fun, interactive initiative. | ||||
| Looking ahead, the Nosbonsing club is considering an impressive list of "to do" projects, including adopting a highway, completing Wasi Lake Walleye Spawning surveys, and helping to eradicate purple loosestrife through the O.F.A.H./M.N.R. Invading Species program. | ||||
| The Nosbonsing Anglers and Hunters invite all area sports enthusiasts to join their active, community-focused club and extend an invitation to attend a meeting or visit them online. | ||||
